What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a low impact, self-defence martial art and popular modern sport where the goal is to control an opponent on the ground and apply leverage and technique to force your opponent into submission using joint locks and choke holds

BJJ has been proven in mixed martial arts contests around the world as one of the most effective and practical forms of martial art and is often described as a perfect blend of engaging physical activity and intellectual "chess-like" problem solving

Benefits of BJJ

BJJ allows a smaller person to defeat a bigger and stronger opponent by using superior leverage and technique. Practitioners at Open Sparring will learn both self-defence and competition sport principles.

Benefits include:

  • Improved physical conditioning, core strength, flexibility and mobility

  • Confidence and sense of achievement from mastering a real and practical self-defence skillset

  • Ongoing growth and development. BJJ is a lifelong journey of learning that never ends!

  • A sense of camaraderie and belonging to an awesome and friendly community of martial artists

Why Open Sparring?

Open Sparring is the gym that Sydney needs right now. There are some solid martial arts gyms in the CBD, but none of them cater to the full-time worker who is looking to spar. Open Sparring meets this need and then some.

Perhaps more importantly, the atmosphere in Open Sparring is incredible. The owners radiate enthusiasm, and are genuinely committed to providing a fight gym that people want. I can't wait to see how this place evolves over the coming months, and will definitely be back.

You can't spell "Open Sparring" without "A", which is the score I give this place.

Thomas Derricott - A valued Open Sparring member

Open Sparring has proudly built a strong reputation as one of Sydney’s friendliest and open martial arts gyms. Conveniently located in the CBD (2 min walk from Town Hall) it regularly attracts both casual martial artists and World Champions alike.

Our clean and modern facility, open door policy, world class instruction and absence of dogmatic or cultish behaviour are just a few of the reasons that separate us from the rest and why people travel far and wide to be a part of our community.
